Matt, the CFI-in-Chief at The Flight AttitudeTM, started his career back in 2006 as a Manhattan-based management consultant. As a consultant, Matt was responsible for developing and documenting internal policies, procedures, and processes for companies large and small. While his 12-year career in consulting was fulfilling, Matt felt the itch to get out from behind a desk, so he moved to the Phoenix, AZ area to become a pilot.
After Matt earned his Commercial Pilot certificate, it came time to start his Certificated Flight Instructor (CFI) training. A significant portion of the checkride preparation for the CFI involves developing lesson plans & other training documents that enable CFIs to be efficient and effective teachers. This can be an overwhelming and daunting task, to say the least, but one that is right in Matt’s wheelhouse.
Matt’s experience creating policies & procedures as a consultant proved to be invaluable. It took two weeks of planning & organizing before he even put pen to paper, and after what amounted to hundreds of hours of creating, proofreading, and editing, Matt realized that these lesson plans would never be finalized. They would need continuous attention and updating, especially with updates to FAA source materials and the annual release of the new FAR/AIM. Therefore, Matt decided it was time to put them all together in a binder and put them to good use.
During his time as a CFI, students & instructors alike commented on how thorough and organized his lesson plans were; some even going as far as calling them, “the platinum standard.” Matt went into every lesson knowing that he could open up that binder and teach his students any of those lessons with confidence.
After working with other CFI candidates, Matt realized that not everyone has the time or desire to develop such comprehensive lesson plans. As a CFI candidate, you have to take in a massive amount of information, make sense of it all, then figure out the best way to teach it. Some of these CFI candidates have families, full-time jobs, and careers outside of flight training. Who has the time to draft lesson plans on top of all that?
